The apparition of “Emma” - a ‘Saxon maiden’ - haunts the pool. It gets its name supposedly from the drowning here of a young girl resulting from the actions of King John. Since then, no birds are said to sing here. Her apparition has been seen swimming in the waters. However, it transpires that the involvement of King John was a 19th century embellishment on a local legend. There may be a ghost here, but her identity may be somewhat different.
