The streets are haunted by the sounds of the Wild Hunt - “baying hounds, trotting horses and jingling brides” - have been heard by locals. However, nobody dared look out of their windows when the Hunt ride by.

We are sure that this is nothing to do with the comedian. The Harry Hill in question was a leper who was cured by the water in the well. In more recent times, other illnesses have allegedly been cured.

Along the road outside Combe Sydenham Manor House (pictured above), the ghost of Sir George Sydenham gallops on his grey horse. Sir George fell out with Sir Francis Drake, which stemmed from marital problems. Drake was engaged to Sydenham’s daughter, but his lengthy spells at sea annoyed Sir George to the extent that he decided to marry her off another suitor. Drake heard about this and was understandably angered. Despite being hundreds of miles away, legend has it that Drake fired a canon ball at the church! The projectile landed at Stogumber Church just as the wedding procession arrived, causing so much consternation that the ceremony was postponed. As it turned out, the missile was in fact a meteorite that was kept for many years at Combe Sydenham.
