St. John's College

Magdalen College

Magdalen College is a constituent college of the University of Oxford, founded in 1458 by William of Waynflete. It is situated next to the River Cherwell and the Oxford botanic garden, and has within its grounds a deer park and Addison's Walk. The Magdalen Tower is an Oxford landmark.

According to sources, the college is haunted with reported effects including audible phenomena of whispering and footsteps, and the appearance of the apparitions. These include a figure in black, believed to be a monk, that was sighted gliding towards the Colonade Arches.

Also reported is a "strong feeling of presence" in a student bedroom, and a dark figure crawling across a carpet.

St. John’s College

St. John’s College (pictured above) is reputedly haunted by the ghost of Archbishop William Laud (7 October 1573 – 10 January 1645), who was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1633 to 1645. One of the High Church Caroline divines; he opposed radical forms of Puritanism. This, and his support for King Charles I, resulted in his beheading in the midst of the English Civil War. Consequently, he is said to haunt this great college in extravagantly ghoulish style by bowling his head across the library floor!
