Rufford Abbey is regarded as the best-preserved remains of a Cistercian abbey west cloister range in England, dating mainly from around 1170. Incorporated into part of a 17th century mansion, it set in Rufford Country Park. It is managed by Nottinghamshire County Council in co-operation with English Heritage.
The Abbey is haunted by a number of ghosts, one of which allegedly frightened one poor man to death. Could it have been that of a giant monk with only a skull for a face that accounts state haunts the house? A White Lady walks the grounds and buildings, and something unseen and "clammy" would wake women sleeping in the building many years ago.
