Featherstone Castle

Featherstone Castle is a is a large Gothic style country mansion and grade I listed building. The 11th century manor house on this site belonged to the Featherstonehaugh family, but by the time a 13th-century hall house existed, a three-storey pele tower was added in 1330 by Thomas de Featherstonehaugh. However, Sir William Howard acquired it in the 17th century, and he remodelled and enlarged the building. It is a private residence and NOT open to the public.

The castle is reputedly haunted by the sounds of groaning and rattling chains. Some claim that this is the ghost of Reginald FitzUrse who was starved to death here. The ghost of a woman is seen around the castle and in the local area. Legend states that this is the wraith of Abigail, the daughter of the Baron of Featherstone.
