Middleham Castle was built in 1190 by Robert Fitzrandolph, 3rd Lord of Middleham and Spennithorne. The castle is most famous for being the childhood home of King Richard III, though he spent very little of his adulthood there. The ruins are now in the care of English Heritage.
The castle is reputedly haunted by spectral knights.
According to Coxe, there is buried treasure to be found at Middleham Castle. Local lore suggests that all you have to do to find it is run around the castle three times and just dig where you stop!

According to Coxe, Middleham Moor is haunted by the apparition of a woman "in mourning". It has been suggested she was murdered by a jealous suitor and her body buried on the moorland.
