The ruins of Thornholme Priory lie on the western side of the Ancholme carrs between the villages of Broughton and Appleby. This small monastery, for about 12 Augustinian canons, was founded c1150 by King Stephen.
According to Coxe, this sits on farmland and is haunted by the apparition of a woman wearing a "black silk dress". Whether she is connected to the order that once occupied the area is not known.

Santon is located just at the northern-western parts of Broughton. There you may be able to find a depression known locally as the Queen Maude Hole.
According to Coxe, it is reputedly haunted by the ghost of Queen Maude (or Queen Mab).
