The henge enclosing Knowlton Church (pictured above) is only one of three henges and associated earthworks. However, Church Henge is the best preserved. Nearby is Great Barrow, the largest round barrow in Dorset. Aerial photographs reveal a large number of ploughed-out barrows in the immediate vicinity. Coxe states that the site is reputedly haunted, but provides no further details as to what by.
According to Jones, a phantom horse and rider gallops across the site at night; a face has been reported looking from one of the windows in the tower; a weeping woman (possibly a nun) reported kneeling outside the church; a tall figure wearing black clothing with a "menacing aura"; and "ethereal voices" have been heard.
