St. Peter’s Church

Wolfeton House

Wolfeton House is a fine medieval and Elizabethan manor house lying in water meadows - much embellished in 1580 with splendid plaster-work and panelling. The medieval gatehouse has two unmatched and older towers. There is also a Chapel and Cyder House to be visited. It was built by Sir Thomas Trenchard in 1505, and is reputedly haunted by three apparitions.

The first is said to be a descendent of the founder, who drives a coach and pair of horses up the staircase! The second is the wife of another family member who committed suicide by slitting her own throat – she now wanders the Great Chamber as a headless Grey Lady. The third spectre is a priest that is seen in the Gatehouse. Phantom footsteps have also been reported and these have been attributed to the priest.
