None other than the ghost of Sir Francis Drake reputedly haunts Nutwell Court (pictured above). Another of the Drake family, a man named Eliot Drake, haunts the road outside the property. He challenged a friend to a horse race to a particular inn. However, whilst en route, the horse stumbled causing both Eliot and the horse to break their necks in the resulting fall. His apparition is supposed to appear on the anniversary of the race, although the author Coxe does not indicate the actual date in his book, 'Haunted Britain'.
