Church of St Thomas Becket Churchyard

The churchyard (picture courtesy of David Dixon) is claimed to have an unusual atmosphere and audible phenomena, which some claim to be the result of events that occurred in 1648. In September of that year, Scottish soldiers were taken prisoner following the Battle of Ribble Moor. Some were taken to a small church at Chapel-en-le-Frith and incarcerated for 16 days. 44 prisoners died in what must have been squalid conditions, and were then buried in the churchyard. Although the original church has long since disappeared, the graves remain. Sounds of "groaning men... and a Scottish lament being sung" have been reported. Others claim to feel an "intense melancoly".
