Leigh Woods

Leigh Woods

Leigh Woods is a 2-square-kilometre area of woodland. Stokeleigh Camp, a hillfort thought to have been occupied from the third century BC to the first century AD, lies within the reserve. It is now under the care of the National Trust.

The woods are reputedly haunted by the ghost of Isambard Kingdom Brunel (9th April 1806 – 15th September 1859), who looks from their vantage point over his creation that he never got to see completed - the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Others have reported "unearthly screams" coming from the woodland and dogs sometimes behave "strangely" there.
